The European Commission has warned the Greek government that the European Court of Justice could impose fines if Greece does not comply urgently with a recent ruling on urban wastewater.rnIn 2004, the ECJ ruled that Greece had failed to put in place an adequate plan for the management of hazardous waste in the region of Thriassio Pedio which had led to pollution being discharged in the "ecologically sensitive" Gulf of Elefsina. Five years on, Greece still has not build the urban wastewater collection and treatment system required.
