Little backing for CO_2 standard in industrial emissions Directive

A CO_2 Emission Performance Standard (EPS) would affect the EU's emission trading scheme (ETS) and should therefore be rejected, according to a European Commission official working on the proposed Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).rnSpeaking at a workshop on 27 January, Marianne Wenning, Head of Unit in charge of the IED (which recast seven directives including the IED and the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control - IPPC Directive), said she feared that with an unchanged cap of the ETS, an EPS for power generation would reduce this sector's demand for emissionrnallowances. This would cut the price of the allowances and increase emissions in other sectors. She argued that an EPS as a result would lead to no overall emissions reductions.
