MEP to press Commission on Baltic dioxin in fish waiver

Swedish Socialist MEP Asa Westlund will next week quiz the European Commission over a waiver allowing fish from the Baltic containing levels of the cancer-causing contaminant dioxin above EU limits to be sold in Finland and Sweden. Westlund will put the Commission on the spot during a 21 June Question Time session at the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. The question notes that the 2006 Commission Regulation (1881/2006) on setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuff, which lays down dioxin limits, offers Sweden and Finland a waiver for certain fish species originating from the Baltic region.
