Europe must do more to reach climate goals, say Green MEPs

Europe is going to have to do a lot more to achieve its goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 90 per cent by 2050, according to a report outlining Green MEPs' recommendations for moving towards a low-carbon economy launched last week. To achieve the target, according to the Oko Institut study's "Vision Scenario", emission reductions must start at 35 per cent in 2020 compared with 1990 levels, with a further drop to 57 per cent in 2030 before eventually reaching a 91 per cent cut by 2050. Additional measures in land use, land use change and forestry could enable a 95 per cent emissions cut.
