German dioxin scare spreads across EU borders

Eggs from German farms affected by a dioxin scare have been distributed in the Netherlands and might subsequently have entered the UK in the form of processed products, European Commission sources told our sister publication Agra Europe last week (see also story, News Review). The distribution of the products in question, from Germany to the Netherlands, was confirmed by a notification lodged with the EU's food safety alert system, as an addendum to Germany's initial notification that dioxins had been found in vegetable feed fat for pigs and poultry. The Commission has requested feedback from Dutch officials.
