MEPs demand energy research funds for renewables, energy efficiency and smart grids

The European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) has voted to allocate €6 billion of the next energy research budget to renewables, energy efficiency, smart grids and energy storage. Voting on 28 November, MEPs, from both the Socialist and European People's Party, who hoped to put a stop to fossil fuels research were overruled, as the majority of MEPs said funding into how fossil fuels could help "intermittency" issues of renewables should be allowed.
