Climate to feature on informal Farm Council agenda

Water shortages and land abandonment due to climatic events will be on the agenda when the 27 agriculture ministers and EU Commissioner Dacian Ciolos gather in Nicosia, Cyprus, next week for an informal Farm Council meeting. Yet delegations are also expected to consider the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform positions being taken by MEPs, after an unprecedented number of amendments to the Commission's proposals were submitted last month. Varying calls for changes to the Commission's "greening" plans have emerged, while a further group of amendments is calling for much greater redistribution of farm subsidies across the bloc -although a final decision on the latter is expected to be taken by European affairs ministers in December.
