Portugal: Green group demands plastic bag ban

Portuguese environmental association Quercus is calling for a ban on all free supermarket plastic bags as consumers increasingly take to using reusable "eco" bags and some supermarkets charge for single use plastic bags. In a 25 April press release, Quercus said that plastic is one of the most serious causes of pollution, because if it is not properly recycled, it remains in the environment for many years. According to Quercus, the most serious case is the presence of plastic in the sea where it is mistaken for food and swallowed by animals that end up dying as a result.
