While the health effects of the electronic cigarette are still the subject of debate, the same goes for their environmental impacts, according to France's recovery scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), Ecologic. In a press release last month, Ecologic reminded French consumers that the increasingly popular electronic cigarettes fall under category 2 of the 2002 EU's WEEE directive: small household appliances which also include vacuum cleaners, irons, toasters, fryers, body care appliances, clocks, electric knives and scales. It is therefore subject to an eco-contribution and must be collected at the end of its life according to environmental regulations.
