The EU and the US have agreed to extend scientific co-operation on standards and measurements in several areas, including environment, climate, energy efficiency and nanotechnology, as part of ongoing negotiations for a free trade pact, the TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). In a 17 July statement, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) said that it had agreed with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that day to expand their current scientific co-operation to ten different areas to help reach the goal of having compatible standards on both sides of the Atlantic.
