Assessment of cocktail effect a priority for EFSA

Assessing the so-called 'cocktail effect' from combined exposure to different chemicals is a priority for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the agency revealed on 12 July in publishing a review of international frameworks for assessing chemical mixtures (see story above). "People, animals and the environment can be exposed to multiple chemicals at once from a variety of sources, but current risk assessment is usually carried out on one chemical substance at a time," the Authority explained in the news story on its website, adding that it has prioritised assessment of combined exposure to multiple chemicals because of the challenges this poses for EFSA's scientific work.
