With the number of old European ships sent for dismantling on South Asia beaches increasing 75 per cent in 2012 compared to 2011, the global coalition, NGO Shipbreaking Platform, has insisted on the urgent need for a financial mechanism to hold ship-owners accountable. In a 5 February press release, the non-governmental organisation has slammed the fact that some 365 "toxic-laden" ships were sent for breaking in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, and called on MEPs currently discussing the issue in the European Parliament's Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety to agree on a financial mechanism as soon as possible.
