Packaging part of environmental footprint pilot projects

Packaging is to be included in a series of 11 pilot projects, which kick off next month, to test the environmental footprint of food, feed and drink using the Envifood Protocol, launched by the European Food Sustainable Consumption and Production Round Table in November 2012. The European Commission selected the 11 pilots from some 30 different applications put forward for the second wave of testing under Envifood. The selection by a committee of Commission officials from various directorates general was based on criteria such as the capacity of those proposing the project to involve a representative percentage of the market, the availability of good quality secondary life cycle data and of existing Product Category Rules (PCR) or similar documents.
