CoR to call for binding targets on plastic bags

The EU's assembly of regional and local representatives - the Committee of the Regions (CoR) - will demand an 80 per cent reduction target for plastic bags at tomorrow's CoR plenary session in Brussels. Rapporteur for the European Commission proposal for a directive on lightweight plastic carrier bags, UK Councillor Linda Gillham says that the Commission proposals lack ambition; that there must be binding rather than voluntary level reduction and prevention targets and that there should be a ban on free lightweight bags by 2020.
