Ireland facing fines from ECJ on renewable energy

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) is likely to impose daily fines on Ireland for failing to implement parts of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED), including sustainability criteria for biofuels.The RED set the EU the aim of sourcing 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020 and also requires all member states to get 10 per cent of their transport fuel from renewables - although talks are currently ongoing on changing the mandate for biofuels.However, the European Commission announced this week that Ireland still has not fully transposed it into national legislation - the deadline was 5 December 2010 - and has asked the ECJ to impose a daily fine.
