Oregon Adopts New, Amended Air Rules To Align Programs With Federal Regulations

Portland, Ore.-The Oregon Environmental Quality Commission adopted new and amended rules Dec. 12 that will align Oregon's air quality programs with federal regulations.rnThe agency now will submit the rules as part of its Clean Air Act state implementation plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval.rnMany of the new rules have been adopted by reference, but some are more distinctive, such as the gasoline dispensing rules that also were approved Dec. 12.rnOther rules also go beyond federal requirements. A utility mercury rule is expected to effectively limit the number of coal-fired power plants in the state. It would cap total mercury emissions from all power plants at 60 pounds per year by 2018. Coal-fired power plants also would have to control 90 percent of mercury emissions by 2012.
