A coalition of 12 health and environmental groups filed a lawsuit Dec. 18 to force the Environmental Protection Agency to set long overdue hazardous air pollutant emissions standards for power plants (American Nurses Ass'n v. Johnson, D. D.C., docket number unavailable, 12/18/08).rnThe plaintiffs, including the American Nurses Association, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Conservation Law Foundation, Environment America, Environmental Defense Fund, Izaak Walton League of America, Natural Resources Council of Maine, Natural Resources Defense Council, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Sierra Club, Ohio Environmental Council, and the Water-keeper Alliance, are asking the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to set "a mandatory and enforceable schedule" for EPA to issue hazardous pollutant requirements for power plants.rn"Power plants are the largest unregulated industrial source of air toxics," Earthjustice attorney Jim Pew, who will represent the plaintiffs, said in a statement. "It is unconscionable that six years after the deadline for action, we still do not have air toxics controls on these large existing sources of pollution."
