EU, U.S. Tighten Energy Star Label Criteria For Computer Monitors, Electronic Screens

Electronic displays such as computer monitors must conform to stricter energy-efficiency standards if they are to qualify for the transatlantic Energy Star eco-label, the European Commission said Oct. 29.rnThe stricter requirements to qualify for the labels apply to display screens and associated electronic components and cover monitors, digital photo frames, and electronic screens used in shops. They do not apply to digital televisions, which are covered in the European Union by separate energy-efficiency standards.rnThe Commission said the European Union and the United States had agreed to upgrade the criteria for a range of products. For example, energy consumption limits for certain digital screens would change from 36 to 22 watts when switched on, and from 2 watts to 1 watt when on standby.
