Law Requires Manufacturers To Post Auto Air Conditioning Leakage Rates

PAUL, Minn.-A Minnesota law that took effect Jan. 1 will require motor vehicle manufacturers to provide the state with the leakage rates for air conditioners in 2009 model year vehicles.rnThe law, which was approved by the 2008 Minnesota Legislature, also requires the commissioner of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to report on gases that have a global warming potential that are used in the state and possible alternatives to them by Feb. 1.rnChuck Laszewski, spokesman for the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, said H.F. 3545, sponsored by Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL), was proposed as a means of addressing "super warmers," gases that trap even more heat than carbon dioxide. The law requires car manufacturers to report the leakage rate of air conditioners for all makes of vehicles they sell in Minnesota.
