New York City Summer Air Quality Survey Links Higher Pollution, Heavier Traffic

Four major air pollutants are heavily concentrated in New York City areas where traffic is heaviest, pointing to motor vehicles as a key local source of street-level pollution during the summer, the city Health Department said Aug. 17.rnIn the third report from the New York City Community Air Survey, the department found that summer 2009 levels of fine particle pollution, elemental carbon, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone varied widely across city neighborhoods.
