State Approves Limit on Greenhouse Gas Used to Insulate High-Voltage Equipment

The California Air Resources Board approved a measure Feb. 25 requiring about 75 electric utilities and other facilities to limit and monitor emissions of sulfur hexafluoride, a potent greenhouse gas used to insulate high-voltage equipment.rnThe rule requires the facilities to limit their emissions initially to no more than 10 percent of their capacity to emit, a measure that takes into account all of the gas contained in the facilities' equipment. That limit takes effect in 2012.
