Obama Seeks $28.4 Billion DOE Budget To Expand Clean Energy, Reduce Fossil Fuels

President Obama submitted Feb. 1 his fiscal year 2011 budget request to Congress recommending a 6.8 percent increase for the Department of Energy to $28.4 billion, up $1.8 billion from the current year's $26.6 billion. Obama's budget proposal highlights the administration's emphasis on clean energy technologies, including nuclear as well as renewables, while cutting research and development programs for fossil fuels. Obama will try again to eliminate more than $2.7 billion in tax subsidies for oil, coal, and natural gas companies that should yield almost $40 billion in government revenue over the next 10 years. Congress did not approve the tax proposal in Obama's first budget in 2009.
