Administration Wants More Research Funds To Push Clean Energy Advances, Chu Says

The Obama administration wants to boost federal research and development funding to accelerate advances in climate-friendly technologies such as plug-in hybrid vehicle batteries, solar power, and improved energy efficiency, Energy Secretary Steven Chu told a Senate committee Jan. 21.rn"The administration understands the urgent need for more scientific research and plans to double the federal investment in key R&D agencies," the secretary told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Chu did not specify how much of the increase would be requested for Department of Energy research. But the secretary is scheduled to testify before the committee Feb. 4 to coincide with the release next month of President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget request.
