EPA to Propose Rule Setting Guidelines For Reducing Dental Amalgam Discharges

The Environmental Protection Agency plans to propose a rule in early 2012 to control discharges of mercury in dental amalgam into sewer systems, according to an effluent guidelines plan released Oct. 20. While agency officials have been discussing plans to propose a dental amalgam rule for some time, the final effluent guidelines plan marks EPA's formal announcement. The document also marks a reversal from EPA's effluent program plan for 2008, when the agency said it would not proceed with a rulemaking.
