Washington State Asks NRC to Clarify Order Terminating Work on Yucca Mountain Site

Washington state asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Sept. 12 to clarify the meaning of a vote and subsequent order on the fate of a license application for a planned nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev. A 2-2 vote by four members of the commission Sept. 9 on the future of the license and a concomitant order filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit calling a halt to all work conducted by NRC's licensing board is "contradictory," Andrew A. Fitz, senior counsel for the Washington attorney general, said in a Sept. 12 letter to NRC's general counsel.
