Tall smokestacks at coal-fired power plants are "one of several factors" that contribute to the interstate transportation of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, according to a Government Accountability Office report released June 10. Taller smokestacks, those that are 500 feet tall and taller and are intended to better disperse pollutant emissions, allow those pollutants to travel greater distances and provide more time for the pollutants to react in the atmosphere to form ozone and particulate matter, the GAO said in its report.
