TVA to Spend Up to $5 Billion to Upgrade Pollution Controls at Coal-Fired Power Plants

RALEIGH, N.C.-The Tennessee Valley Authority will invest between $3 billion and $5 billion in new air pollution controls and retire almost one-third of its coal-fired generating units as part of a settlement reached with the Environmental Protection Agency, states, and public interest groups, EPA announced April 14 (Alabama v. Tennessee Valley Authority, E.D. Tenn., No. 3:ll-cv-170, settlement announced 4/14/11). According to EPA, the proposed agreement resolves alleged violations of Clean Air Act rules at 11 of TVA's coal-fired power plants in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The agency had alleged that TVA violated the Clean Air Act's prevention of significant deterioration and new source review requirements, as well as new source performance standards and operating permit requirements.
