Puerto Rico Agrees to Pay $2.3 Million For Cleanup of Vega Baja Landfill Site

Puerto Rico agreed to pay at least $2.3 million for the cleanup of groundwater and soil contamination at a former landfill in Vega Baja, according to a proposed consent decree (United States v. Puerto Rico, D.P.R., No. 3:12-cv-1988, proposed consent decree 12/4/12; 77 Fed. Reg. 73,496). Puerto Rico, along with its housing department, land authority, and electric power authority, will be responsible for both past and future costs associated with developing plans for and overseeing remedy of the Vega Baja site under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, according to the proposed decree filed Dec. 4 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
