Bill to Shield U.S. Airlines From EU Trading Could Result in Trade Disputes, Speakers Say

Legislation that would shield U.S. airlines from the European Union's greenhouse gas Emissions Trading System is likely to be approved by Congress in November amid a brewing dispute that could escalate into a trade war, panelists said at an Oct. 1 forum on emissions trading. The Senate version of the legislation (S. 1956), approved by unanimous consent Sept. 22, would authorize the secretary of transportation to prohibit U.S. airlines from complying with the EU law extending emissions trading to airlines (43 ER 2460, 9/28/12).
