EPA to Seek Comment on Requested Waiver Of Ethanol Rules Due to Drought Concerns

The Environmental Protection Agency will solicit comments on whether to waive the renewable fuel standard requirements for ethanol after four governors raised concerns about the drought's impact on the corn supply and feed prices for livestock producers. EPA said it has made no decision about whether it would be advisable to waive the ethanol requirement either in part or entirely. However, the agency posted a notice on its website Aug. 20 indicating it will seek comments for 30 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register. "This notice is in keeping with EPA's commitment to an open and transparent process to evaluate requests the agency receives under the Clean Air Act, and does not indicate any predisposition to a specific decision," the agency said in a statement.
