State to Become First in Nation to Ban Hydraulic Fracturing for Gas Exploration

The Vermont Legislature May 4 enacted a measure (H. 464) that would make the state the first in the nation to ban hydraulic fracturing for natural gas exploration. The bill now goes to Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), who expressed his opposition to fracking earlier this year. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves pumping water, chemicals, and other substances into shale rock at high pressure to enhance extraction of natural gas.
