GenOn Will Close Eight Power Plants, Citing Costs of Environmental Compliance

GenOn Energy Inc. is planning to close eight power plants, seven of them coal-fired, in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey with a generating capacity of 3,140 megawatts as a result of various environmental regulations and market conditions, the company announced Feb. 29. Houston-based GenOn will shut down four coal-fired plants in April 2015, before they would have to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's mercury and air toxics standards. The affected plants are Avon Lake in Ohio and New Castle, Shawville, and Titus in Pennsylvania.
