Coalition Heartened by Funding Level For Restoration in Obama Budget Proposal

Leaders of a group committed to Great Lakes protection were cheered that President Obama's fiscal year 2013 proposed budget maintains funding for the lakes' restoration at $300 million, the same level allotted to the program in 2012. But "Congress controls the purse strings," so advocates there need to ensure the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative gets the recommended dollars, Jeff Skelding, campaign director for the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, told reporters in a Feb. 15 conference call. "The [Great Lakes] congressional delegation has stepped up to the plate before," he said. "We believe they're going to do it again."
