EPA Says Level for 1,4-Dioxane Is Wrong, To Correct Health-Based Goal Within Months

The Environmental Protection Agency has acknowledged that it erroneously published a health advisory level for 1,4-dioxane (p-dioxane) under the Safe Drinking Water Act and is cautioning states not to use it for guidance in their cleanup programs.Until the mistake is corrected in the next two to three months, state agencies should take "whatever action is necessary" to ensure the erroneous level for the industrial solvent in the 2011 Edition of the Drinking Water Standards and Health Advisories table is not being used for cleanup goals for sites contaminated with the chemical, EPA said in a Jan. 10 letter acknowledging the error.
