Spent nuclear fuel from commercial power plants stored for more than 60 years would be fully managed under a regulatory program similar to the one now in place, which assumes waste storage on-site for up to 60 years, according to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission draft report released Jan. 3. This is a key assumption in the report, Background and Preliminary Assumptions for an Environmental Impact Statement—Long-Term Waste Confidence Update, which addresses the NRC's expectation that spent nuclear fuel will be stored longer than originally intended because of uncertainties in the national strategy for disposal following the rejection of the Yucca Mountain underground waste repository.
