Defense Department Objection Clouds Future Of SunZia Southwest Transmission Project

The Defense Department has objected to a portion of a proposed transmission line designed to carry power from renewables and other energy sources in the Southwest as the Interior Department considers giving the projects final approval. The SunZia Southwest Transmission Project presents "significant risks to national security" because a portion of the 515-mile preferred route identified by the Interior Department would cross the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, John Conger, acting deputy under secretary of defense, said in a letter.
