More Use of Renewable Energy Would Not Affect Electricity Grid Reliability, Report Says

Increased reliance on wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources would not make the electricity grid less reliable, according to a report released April 17. The report, prepared by Synapse Energy Economics Inc. for the nonprofit Civil Society Institute, concluded the national power grid could meet or exceed demand in 99.4 percent of hours without importing electricity from other regions and without using reserve supplies. It also found that surplus electricity supplies would be available for exports in 8.6 percent of all hours, creating a surplus that could be used in surrounding regions.
