Report: Energy Department Unlikely to Use $16.6B Authorized for Vehicle Loan Program

The Energy Department is unlikely to use $16.6 billion in loan guarantee authority that remains under a program for manufacturers of fuel-efficient vehicles and their components, according to a Government Accountability Office report. Though the department is still accepting applications for the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program, no applications are under "active" consideration, and seven applications that have been received are considered ineligible for reasons that include missing information and insufficient technology "readiness," according to the report, which was made public March 15.
