Higher Ethanol Blends, Fuel Pump Failures Linked in Petroleum Industry-Funded Study

Higher ethanol blends in gasoline could result in fuel pump failures, erroneous warnings from "check engine" lights, and inaccurate fuel gauge readings, according to an industry-funded study released Jan. 29. While the study does not quantify how many vehicles could be at risk, Robert Greco, American Petroleum Institute group director for downstream and industry operations, told reporters that a "substantial number " of vehicles could be affected. The components tested represented almost 29 million model year 2001 through 2007 vehicles on the road.
