Information Requested on Federal Standards For Residential Central Cooling, Heat Pumps

The Energy Department has issued a request for information on whether to amend energy efficiency standards for residential central air conditioners and heat pumps. The department published a notice in the Nov. 5 Federal Register seeking information from the public on whether new standards would result in a significant amount of additional energy savings and whether those standards would be technologically feasible and economically justified. The department's last rule toughening standards for residential air conditioners and heat pumps was issued in 2011. The Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 requires the department to follow such a rule within six years with a notice of proposed new standards or a determination that existing standards do not need to be amended.
