EPA to Pursue 200 Early Outs, Buyouts In Specific Program Offices by January

The Environmental Protection Agency will seek to reduce its workforce by 200 through voluntary early retirements and buyouts in nine specific program offices by January 2015, according to a memorandum obtained by Bloomberg BNA Oct. 14. The memorandum, from then-Acting Deputy Administrator Lisa Feldt, said the reductions were necessary due to the unpredictability of attrition, evolving work approaches and continuing budgetary uncertainty. "Over the last couple of years, resource constraints have forced us to operate under a series of temporary, agency-wide hiring policies," the memorandum said. "We can and must make long-term changes to support you and the vital work you do for the American people." Approved applicants would leave the agency by Jan. 9, 2015.
