Many U.S. rivers are less acidic now than they were 65 years ago, partially due to decreased acidic inputs, according to a U.S. Geological Survey study released July 7. Of the 23 rivers assessed for the study, the alkalinity-or ability to neutralize acid inputs-of 14 increased between 1945 and 2010, according to the study, "Long-term trends in alkalinity in large rivers of the conterminous U.S. in relation to acidification, agriculture, and hydrologic modification." Three rivers saw decreases in alkalinity and the other six saw no trend, according to the study published in the journal Science for the Total Environment.
