Health Groups Say EPA Advisory Panel Should Recommend Lower Ozone Standard

A coalition of national health organizations urged a federal advisory committee to recommend that the Environmental Protection Agency set a new ozone air quality standard no higher than 60 parts per billion. The groups, including the American Lung Association, the American Public Health Association and the American Thoracic Society, sent a letter May 19 to the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee calling on it to support a more stringent national ambient air quality standard for ozone. The EPA is reviewing the current ozone standard of 75 ppb to determine if a revision is needed, a process that is required every five years. The agency issued a draft policy assessment in February determining that it would be appropriate for the agency to set the standard somewhere between QO ppb and 70 ppb (45 ER 345, 2/7/14).
