Report Says Climate Change Represents National Security Threat, Source of Conflict

Effects from climate change already are causing national security problems in some countries and could serve as a future "catalyst of conflict" across vulnerable parts of the world, a panel of retired admirals and generals concluded. The report, "National Security and the Accelerating Risks of Climate Change," from the federally funded CNA Corporation Military Advisory Board, concluded international action on climate change has been insufficient, regional conflicts in Africa and the Middle East have been influenced by climate change and rising sea levels continue to place communities along vulnerable coastal regions at risk. Military experts said the U.S. should adopt a strong leadership role on the issue internationally, the Defense Department should put additional funding toward resilience efforts and the federal government should consider access to food, water and energy as part of its comprehensive decision-making.
