NRC Says It Will Update Assessment Of Low-Level Waste Regulatory Program

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is updating its low-level waste management program and is soliciting comments on its plan, according to a notice scheduled for publication in the May 15 Federal Register. The agency conducted its first assessment of the management plan in 2007. Because of new developments and challenges in low-level radioactive waste disposal, the NRC said it needs to update the plan. Among these were the desire of industry for greater flexibility and reliability and low-level disposal options, increased storage capacity for certain types of waste because of limited access to the Barnwell, S.C., disposal facility, the potential need to dispose of large quantities of power plant decommissioning waste and limited resources in the NRC's program.
