Groundwater Overuse Depleting Aquifers, In Many Parts of United States, Ceres Says

The outlook for the nation's groundwater is not good and the impact of overuse is being felt in virtually every aquifer, especially in areas with the highest agricultural productivity, the head of the Ceres Water Program said April 30. Sharlene Leurig cited recent U.S. Geological Survey data showing nearly every aquifer in the United States has been depleted by the overuse of groundwater and that similar impacts are being seen globally as well. Leurig, director of the Ceres Water Program, spoke in Boston during the annual conference of the nonprofit organization, which advocates for sustainability leadership by corporations.
