U.S. Emissions Continued to Fall in 2012, Down 10 Percent Since 2005, EPA Reports

U.S. greenhouse gas emissions dropped 3.4 percent in 2012 from 2011 levels, largely due to fuel switching by power plants from coal to natural gas and more efficient cars, continuing a near-decade long decline in emissions, the Environmental Protection Agency announced April 15. Total U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, hy-drofluorocarbons and other greenhouse gases fell to the equivalent of 6,526 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2012, the lowest U.S. total since 1994. U.S. emissions have fallen about 10 percent since 2005, according to the EPA's Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1900-2012.
