Holt to Leave Congress at End of Year, Gives Up Energy-Mining Subcommittee Post

Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.), ranking member of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources., said Feb. 18 that he won't run for reelection. Holt has been a consistent ally of environmental advocates on such issues as the regulation of oil and natural gas development and mining and a consistent critic of Republican legislation to streamline environmental regulations and reduce litigation. In 2013, Holt participated in the Democratic primary in New Jersey to choose a nominee to succeed the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.). Holt described himself as the most "progressive" of the candidates. Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker won the nomination with almost 60 percent of the vote, far outpacing Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) with about 20 percent and Holt with about 17 percent of the vote.
