Better Guidance on Environmental Reviews Expected for Invasive Species, Interior Says

Providing better guidance about conducting environmental reviews for trials and pilot projects involving removal of invasive species-especially as they endanger native plants and animals-remains a priority for the National Invasive Species Council, an Interior Department official said Dec. 1. Jamie Reaser, the DOI council's newly appointed executive director, was responding to Rep. William Hurd (R-Texas) who asked whether the council was looking at streamlining "unnecessary environmental reviews" for trials and projects aimed at eradicating invasive species, such as cheatgrass that is spreading through the Western states, replacing the native sagebrush, and home to the greater sage grouse in many areas. Hurd also asked Reaser about coordinating and encouraging research into grazing practices that would facilitate the removal of cheatgrass.
