Senate Finance Questions VW on Tax Credits; EPA Investigating Economic Benefit, Pollution

The Senate Finance Committee is investigating whether Volkswagen AG made false representations to the Internal Revenue Service when the company certified that its diesel-engine vehicles, which the company has admitted used software to cheat on emissions tests, qualified for a federal tax subsidy. Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), in an Oct. 6 letter, asked the company to provide all certifications and quarterly reports related to eligibility of the vehicles for the advanced lean-burn technology motor vehicle credit. The $1,300 per vehicle credit was available to purchasers of new vehicles that met specific criteria, including fuel economy requirements and emissions standards.
